El Marqués: First Green City photovoltaic system in Spain

Munich, August 13, 2020 – The final inspection has been completed and the final acceptance has taken place. After an initial test phase, “El Marqués”, the first Green City solar power plant on Spanish soil, is now fully operational and has already achieved an initial positive result with a green electricity production of 9.5 GWh. The project is the first photovoltaic system in Green City without feed-in tariffs. To this end, a long-term electricity purchase agreement (PPA) has been concluded with the Swiss group Alpiq.

After a construction period of only 9 months, Green City AG launched its first solar park in Spain, “El Marqués”, in March this year. The complex is located in the northeast of the country, near Zaragoza. In cooperation with local partners, an ideal environment for the solar project was created in a very short time on an area of 18 hectares: a total of 30,464 modules were installed, which with an output of 12.3 MW are expected to produce around 20 million kilowatt hours of green electricity per year. 365 trackers allow the modules to follow the sun’s position from morning to evening to maximize electricity production. The tracker control program optimizes the trajectory of each tracker to minimize shading between PV modules in low sun, early in the morning and late at night, and to avoid production losses.

In the first months of testing, 9.5 GWh were produced. Due to the transnational restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the foundation was a particular challenge, and today Green City celebrates its successful entry into the international PV market.
Jens Mühlhaus, CEO of Green City, sees this as an important step into the future: “Solar energy is becoming the most profitable energy source in Europe. We at Green City are proud that, despite the coronavirus, we have already achieved a clearly good result in electricity generation in a very short time with this plant in Spain. The Spanish market offers a lot of potential for further projects of this kind and we look forward to future developments with confidence”.

Thanks to the good cooperation with local partners, the project was quickly implemented. For Green City, this is the first collaboration with the Spanish construction company IASOL, which is considered to be the main developer and installer in Aragon in the development of clean energy and the construction of photovoltaic systems.
“El Marqués” is the first photovoltaic system in Green City to connect to the grid without feed-in tariffs. Following the successful market entry, Green City AG concluded a long-term electricity purchase agreement (PPA) for “El Marqués” with the Swiss group Alpiq last autumn.
